Omid is 54 years old and was diagnosed in 2014 with multiple system atrophy, an incurable condition. He is seeking to change the law on assisted dying for those like himself with incurable conditions who may yet have years of painful and anguished lives to live: people who would not be able to seek assistance under recently proposed legislation that would restrict access to assisted deaths to those expected to live no longer than six months.
Omid was last month given leave to take his case to a full hearing at the High Court of England and Wales.
FATE Members may wish to hear more about Omid’s case and the legal and moral issues surrounding it. Together with his legal firm, Bindman's LLP, Humanists UK, the New College of Humanities and our colleagues at My Death My Decision, FATE is supporting an event to be held at Bindmans' London offices on 29 June.
This is an opportunity to hear first hand from those closely involved in the case and the broader debate on assisted dying from a legal, ethical and personal perspective.
The event will be introduced by Pavan Dhaliwal from the foremost charity supporting this issue, Humanists UK. Hear also from the leading philosopher, AC Grayling and academic expert Penney Lewis. Omid's lawyers, Saimo Chahal QC (Hon) and Paul Bowen QC will discuss the controversial legal issues arising whilst Lauren Nicklinson and Elaine Spector will speak about their personal experiences and their views as to why the autonomy to choose a dignified death is the appropriate and humane response to those suffering from incurable conditions. Robin Ince, comedian and political commentator will address some of the political issues in play.
The event will also raise funds to support what could be an important opportunity to change the law on assisted dying for those with incurable conditions.
Please register for the event here.
Members who are unable to attend the event but who wish to support the case can do so through CrowdJustice.
