The Suicide Tourist

Members' Screenings of the Film "The Suicide Tourist"

At meetings of Friends-at-the-End in Glasgow on Saturday, 7 June 2008 & in London on Saturday, 14 June 2008 the film "The Suicide Tourist" (Director: John Zaritsky) was screened for members.

Craig Ewert had motor neurone disease. This film depicts Mary & Craig Ewert's preparations in England & trip to Dignitas in Zurich for his assisted suicide in Switzerland. Both screenings were introduced & presented personally by Mary Ewert, Craig's widow. The film won Special Mention at the Vancouver International Film Festival 2007, as "an unflinching, quietly compassionate hymn to life, full of moral complexity".

Craig & Mary Ewert were both activists in earlier years, & it was their wish to record the events surrounding Craig's assisted suicide for the benefit of others who face similar situations & choices.

The film shows, in considerable detail, the events & procedures as they unfolded, & it appears factual & accurate, including the moment of Craig's death. Mary & Craig Ewert's family (daughter & son) were supportive of Craig's decision. They maintain, in Craig's memory, a website/blog http://www.thesuicidetourist.com/ containing more information on the film, its screenings, & reviews by others.

It is hoped that the film will be of influence on the minds of all who see it, & wider showings are being tentatively considered.
